Reading Group — An Introduction to Libertarian Socialism
August 12, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
“Libertarian socialism” is a term currently gaining popularity within left circles, but there is sometimes confusion about what it means. It can encompass everything from anarchism, to syndicalism, to so-called ‘left communism’ (an umbrella term for communist thinkers and organizers which broke with Leninism over questions of state authority, relations of production, and the function of the party). Most importantly, it is not related to the ideology more commonly called ‘libertarianism’, which Murray Bookchin, a libertarian socialist, rebuked as propertarianism — the rule of property owners.
What unites these tendencies is an emphasis on socialism as liberation: from wage labor and alienated labor, from domination by state apparatuses (police, military, court systems, etc), from class exploitation, and from moral or religious ideologies which seek to control and regulate free expression. In their place is the hope of a human community undivided by capital or essentialist categories.
DSA has its own Libertarian Socialist Caucus, which you may find here.
